This is a review of 82 studies conducted by the University of Pavia (Italy) that analyzed the preventive function of various nutrients on the common cold. The study concluded that, by maintaining the immune defense system in a normal healthy state, the incidence of infection of common colds is reduced and/or decreases the severity of symptoms and/or shortens the duration of the disease. Intake of some nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc, as well as echinacea, can significantly influence various aspects of immunity.

Self-care for common colds: the pivotal role of vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, and Echinacea in three main immune interactive clusters (physical barriers, innate and adaptive immunity) involved during an episode of common colds- practical advice on dosages and on the time to take these nutrients/botanicals in order to prevent or treat common colds (2018)
