New results provided by researchers from JiLin Agricultural University (China) on the complex phytochemistry of garlic (Allium sativum L.) provide some guidance in the prevention and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

In the present study it was studied the alliin, main sulfoxide of fresh garlic, as a molecule able to couple and inhibit the main coronavirus protease (Mpro). The results suggested that alliin may be a good candidate for the prevention and treatment of SARS-CoV-2. Discovery of alliin as a putative inhibitor of the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 by molecular docking (2020) Cheng B & Li T. Biotechniques. doi: 10.2144/btn-2020-0038.
